March shipment posted!

March 11th, 2010

We just wanted to let you know that a new shipment has been posted to the Sari Bari store.  For the spring and summer, the Nomita tote bags now have a new handle material option – jute!  You can find them in the Nomita totes section of the store.  This shipment also includes a few more scarves, which were popular in last month’s batch.  Remember, they are found in the blankets section, under the heading “Scarves” on the right.  Unfortunately, there are no regular sari throws in this shipment, but we are hoping for more later in the spring.

New Year, New Shipment

January 15th, 2010

We hope that 2010 is off to a good start for you and those you hold dear. We look forward to an exciting year at Sari Bari! We are pleased to announce two new bag designs in the shipment just posted in the Sari Bari web store – the Minu Sling Bag and the Nomita XL Tote. There are just a few of the newly designed bags in this batch, but there will be many more to come!
The Minu Sling Bag features canvas lining and two inside pockets (one flap, one zippered) and a reinforced canvas ties. They will be priced at $27.00, but there are a few in the web store now specially priced at 25% off, since they lack a button closure, which they will have in future versions.

The Nomita XL Tote, at $28.00, is an expanded version of its predecessor, the Nomita Tote (formerly called the Canvas Strap Bag). The original Nomita Tote measures just under 15” x 15,” and its “big sister” is approximately 16” deep and 19” wide.
There are also a few Parul Bags with bamboo handles in this batch, as well as the classic Sari Bari original throws.

Remember, Sari Bari jute bags make great reusable gift bags for any gift this holiday, and they are discounted to $7.50 with the purchase of another item in the Sari Bari store!

New canvas-strapped bags!

We are delighted to announce the arrival of a new bag design to the Sari Bari web store! The new bags have canvas straps, bottoms, and lining, which comes in either black or brown. The body of the bag is vintage sari fabric, in the style of our other SariBari products. We hope you will enjoy them.

Also in the web store, you will find a new batch of pristine white baby blankets as well as brightly colored ones, which debuted in August. Of course, there are also a variety of our original Sari Bari throws.

Thank you for your continued support of Sari Bari, and for your patience awaiting this shipment.

Jute bags and baby blankets!

August 16th, 2009

Hello, Sari Bari Supporters!

We hope that you have had a good summer. Sari Bari has been quite busy this over the last couple of months. The original Sari Bari moved to a different location at the beginning of July, but the most exciting news is that last Monday a brand new Sari Bari location opened, where 23 women have taken their first steps toward freedom!!! This is a dream come true, so thank you for being a part of it.

We are pleased to say that despite all the changes, bag and blanket production has remained strong, and there will be a new shipment of bags and blankets posted to the web storeMonday evening. With this shipment, baby blankets have risen to a whole new level; there are stunning pure white ones, as well as brightly colored ones just begging for a baby to play on them! There are also standard throw blankets and bamboo-handled bags, which are beautiful as usual. Finally, we are happy to offer Sari Bari jute tote-size bags made by some of our friends in Kolkata who are also working toward the cause of freedom for women in the red light district. They have the trademark vintage sari patches on the front, back, and strap. The jute bags make great shopping bags, or could also be fun as gift bags for presenting other Sari Bari products to your friends! The bags are listed at $15, but if you are making another Sari Bari order, you can add a jute bag for just $7.50!

Also, we are working on a new handbag design, which we hope to have available this fall, so stay posted!

We know that this has been a difficult year financially for many people throughout the world, and we want to thank you for continuing to use your purchasing power to be a part of the freedom story of women in Kolkata’s red light districts despite it.

For the cause of freedom –

NAMES

June 15th, 2009

On the day of our birth we a given a name.  It is our “good name”, as our friends in India call it.  The name is given by our parents who probably spent 9 months thoughtfully considering what name would be ours for the duration our lifetime.   Our names have weight and meaning in defining us, our spoken and written identity to friends, family and even our governments.

We live in a world that loves to name and not all those names are good.  Working with women in the sex trade I see the burden and weight of many who bear false names given to them by culture and society.  They are whores, hookers, prostitutes, and husband stealers.  Many, when you meet them, will not give you their “good name” but instead give another name that they have chosen to hide their true identity and protect them from the false names chosen for them by society.  When they leave the red light area to visit family, they leave their false name behind and again take on their “good name”, leaving behind the other names that plague them and dehumanize them.

Naming has profound importance at Sari Bari.  Each woman chooses her name and that name is the name that you will find marking each blanket.  When the time comes to choose their name, they will most often choose their “good name”, the name given by their parents to identify them.  They want to be identified with their good name, as good women, leaving the false names, the red light name behind.

There is a re-naming that happens at Sari Bari as the women take steps down the road of Exodus into freedom.  The renaming happens as the women begin to understand that the false names and the awful names that society has given them do not need to hold power in their lives or in their identity as human beings.  We process with them the false names and give them new names.  We use names that bring dignity. Instead of prostitute, they are Sari Bari business women, seamstress’, and artists. Instead of a prostitute, they are friends.  Instead of hooker, they are sisters.  Their new names come in relationship, in a safe place of welcome and respite from society, and in the warm cleansing embrace of friendship.  The re-naming is a process.  First comes the giving a new names and them comes the part where each woman must choose to live into her new names.  Living into the new names is the hardest part.  Living into being one who is now called accepted, loved, cherished, daughter, friend, sister, mother, beloved, cleansed, healed and beautiful is no easy path.  Especially when the burden of false names like rejected, despised, dirty, worthless and powerless has been ascribed and those are the names that you have been living into for more years that you can count.

The “good names” must be embraced. We embrace the women, each one, and call them by name. We are compelled by our friends and their lives to continue the pursuit of women who do not yet know their names.  It is the names that move us, compel us toward reconciliation, restoration and healing for the red light areas where these beautiful women live.  Bringing freedom to the red light areas is not about a cause.  It is about a human being with a name.  Ending human trafficking, sexual slavery and the exploitation of persons are truly noble and important causes.  But it is the one woman living into her “good name”, into the new names given, which compels our action, our advocacy, and our hearts. The causes must have the names of persons and be framed by the human persons who compel the causes. I do not know any prostitutes or hookers.  I only know women, friends, sisters and daughters.  And they have beautiful names: Minu, Shopna, Putul, Shakina, Arotun, Josna, Bharoti, Chaya, Rohima and Champa.

Let their names speak to your heart.  Speak the name out loud making it real.  Come and meet them in Kolkata and you too may find a new name.

Something to look forward to in July…

Good news from Sari Bari!

May 11th, 2009

Hello, Friends of Sari Bari!

We have great news from Kolkata!  Last week we signed a contract on a second Sari Bari location; by the end of the summer, it should be ready to expand our production and employ a new group of women!  Thank you for all of your support that has made this happen.

The other good news (although it pales in comparison) is that we are offering a spring-into-summer sale in the Sari Bari web store.  All purchases made from now until May 26th will be marked 25% off, so pick out a new bag or throw for yourself or a friend!

Thank you for using your purchasing power to help women break into freedom!

I just wanted to let you know that a new shipment of bags and a couple blankets was posted on the web store today.  We are having some technical difficulties with our “mass e-mail” function, so the e-mail hasn’t gone out yet, but we wanted to let you know about it for those of you who follow the blog!
