Our History

Sari Bari started in February 2006 in one of the several red-light areas in Kolkata. We started in a small room with three women who were ready to step into freedom from the sex trade. They bravely stepped forward into a new life and are finding their dignity and hope restored.

In November 2006, Sari Bari moved to a larger space in order to open the doors to greater numbers of women. On February 1, 2007, eight more women joined Sari Bari for their six-month training period. All eight women made it through training and began full-time employment with Sari Bari on August 1, 2007.

On July 1, 2007, Sari Bari was excited to welcome two more women into training, and we are excited about what the future will bring for these ladies and their families.

Sari Bari is growing slowly but surely, and we are looking to open a second unit by the end of 2007. Sari Bari hopes to employ 40 women by the end of 2008.
